TikTok launches Local Feed — a stream of local content
TikTok has introduced a new feature called Local Feed, a dedicated stream that highlights content about places, events, and businesses near the user.
Essentially, it’s a new way to discover local services through video — restaurants, shops, events, or interesting places in your city.

The feature is currently being tested in the United States, Indonesia, and Thailand.
What is Local Feed
Local Feed is a new tab in the TikTok app that shows content related to nearby businesses and locations.
In the feed, users may see:
- restaurants and cafés
- retail stores
- local events
- tourist attractions
- videos from local creators
Content is selected based on several factors:
- the user’s location
- the topic of the video
- how recent the content is
With this feature, TikTok is positioning itself not only as an entertainment platform but also as a tool for local discovery.
How TikTok determines location
To generate the Local Feed, TikTok may use several signals, including:
- device geolocation (GPS)
- information from the user’s profile
- location references mentioned in videos

Exact device location is only used with user permission and is disabled by default.
What content appears in Local Feed
Not every video can appear in the Local Feed. Content will not be shown there if:
- the account is private
- the creator is under 18
- the video is visible only to friends
This means that only public content can appear in the local feed.

Why TikTok is launching Local Feed
The main goal of this feature is to help users discover local businesses and services through video.
According to TikTok, Local Feed aims to:
- help small businesses reach nearby customers
- strengthen local communities
- make discovering new places easier
In practice, TikTok is testing a new behavior: people searching for where to eat, where to go, or what to visit directly inside the app.
What this means for marketing
The launch of Local Feed is another step toward local search within TikTok.
In the long term, this could lead to:
- more local content created by businesses
- a stronger role of geolocation in recommendations
- new advertising formats for small businesses
In a way, TikTok is starting to compete with platforms such as Google Maps, Instagram recommendations, and Yelp — but in a short-form video format.
Final thoughts
Local Feed shows that TikTok is expanding beyond entertainment into a platform for discovering local businesses and places.
For now, the feature is only being tested in a few countries. But if the experiment proves successful, TikTok may gradually roll it out to other markets as well.
